Francis Edward Kane

Francis “Frank” Edward Kane, 95, of Charlotte, died peacefully with his wife by his side on Wednesday, March 29, 2023. Frank was born September 25, 1927 in Charlotte, the fourth of five sons born to Leo and Ola (Hutchins) Kane. During his school years, he worked delivering newspapers for The Detroit News, The Detroit Times, and the Grand Rapids Press. In addition, he worked at the Fremont Kraut Company factory where his father was the manager. He was a 1945 graduate of Charlotte High School and remained a lifelong resident of Charlotte. Frank was inducted into the US Army on February 26, 1946, with training at Fort Eustis and Fort Belvoir in Virginia. He was honorably discharged September 9, 1947, as a T/4 refrigeration mechanic.
After his discharge he attended Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, IL for further training in refrigeration. He then applied to work for Hager Fox Heating and Refrigeration Company in Lansing because he could take a night course on the GI bill to learn how to use his refrigeration skills in heating and cooling. He worked for Hager Fox from 1949-1953. In 1953, assisted by his younger brother, Charlie Kane, he started his own business in Charlotte, Kane Heating and Ventilating Company. Frank and Bobbie worked together in the business, Frank on the road and Bobbie in the office. They always exemplified integrity in local business and built the business into the success it still is today. Frank strived to perfection in his work, especially in laying out duct work. Frank sold the business in 1999 to two of his employees, one of whom Chad Lewis still maintains the business under the same name, now in its 70th year.
On June 28, 1952, Frank married the love of his life, Roberta (Bobbie) Jean (Garvey), whom he loved to introduce as his first wife. They celebrated 70 years of marriage in 2022. Together they raised nine children, all of whom survive him: Howard (Kay) of Plymouth, Julia of Montrose, Michael (Jodie) of Valparaiso, IN, Rose (Brian) Negele of Plymouth, Eileen (Marty) Fox of Charlotte, Dennis (Pam) of Charlotte, Frank (Lee) of Eaton Rapids, Carolyn (Robert) Wichlacz of Jenison, and Kurt (Carrie) of Caledonia. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren (with one more on the way), and many nieces and nephews.
Many will remember Frank as a people person with a quietly dedicated work ethic and strong faith. Frank was a lifelong member of St. Mary Catholic Church and served in several ministries, as eucharistic minister, usher, lector, Men’s Club, St. Vincent De Paul Society food pantry, and as a proud member of the Knights of Columbus Council #11875. In addition, Frank was a life member of the Charlotte Lions Club. In 1958, Frank was selected to drive the Vermontville Maple Syrup Queen over the Mackinac Bridge the day it opened. For many years he also enjoyed participating in a weekly bowling league and golf team, collecting quite a few dazzling trophies over the years. Kane’s Heating was a long-time Monday night league sponsor.
He and Bobbie both took flying lessons before marriage and after marriage enjoyed traveling, dancing, golfing, and boating as well as their children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, band concerts, piano recitals and graduations. Their cottage at Crystal Lake, Crystal, MI provided many years of fun with family and friends, in both winter and summer. Besides his care for his family, church and community, Frank will be forever remembered for his great sense of humor and his ability to remember jokes for retelling to share more laughter. Frank had a photographic memory, and his sharp mind remained focused until the very end. In later years he looked forward to his monthly men’s luncheons or dinners where he could share more jokes. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Lawrence (MettaLee), Lyle (Alice), John, and Charlie (Beverly), his in-laws Dee and Helen Garvey and family, and one granddaughter, Michelle Joy Kane.

Mary Kathleen Heath

Mary Kathleen Heath, age 89, of Eagle (formerly of Charlotte), passed away Friday, March 17, 2023, due to complications from Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born October 8, 1936, in Charlotte the daughter of James and Mary (Salter) Polhamus. On February 14, 1954, Mary married James Heath. Mary was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved working in her flower gardens, bowling, and traveling with her family.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Nina Heath of Charlotte; grandson, Anthony (Jill) Coppola of West Seneca, New York; brothers: John (Ruth) Polhamus, Jay (Marcia) Homan Jr.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jim; sisters: Arlene Frith, Betty Polhamus, Esther Clark, Theresa Homan; brothers: Robert Polhamus, Eugene Polhamus, James Polhamus, and Thomas Homan.
A memorial service will be held sometime this summer at the Burkhead-Green-Kilgo Funeral Home.

Wanona E. Hathcox, age 94, passed away in Phoenix, Arizona on February 18, 2023.
Wanona was born January 15, 1929, to the late Myrl and Effie (Shumaker) Dillon in Charlotte, Michigan, graduating from Olivet High School in 1947. After graduating she went to visit her aunt and uncle in Mathews, Missouri, where she was introduced to William Hathcox, soon to become the love of her life, and the man she married, September 11, 1949 at the Congregational Church in Olivet.
Wanona loved bowling, golfing, and traveling; but her greatest joy was her love for her family. Knowing that she was going to be a great-grandmother again, we believe that she stayed with us long enough so that she could get to see and hold this bundle of joy (and she did just that) – her namesake, Charlotte Wanona Hathcox.
Wanona is survived by her sister, Marlene (Eddie) Brummette, and brother, James (Judy) Dillon. She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, William E. Hathcox; her parents, Myrl and Effie (Shumaker) Dillon; brothers, Otto (Morna) and Duane Dillon; her uncles, aunts, niece, and cousins.
Wanona and William had two sons: Daniel (deceased December 2021) and Michael (Leann Meier); grandchildren: Kyle (Malone) Hathcox, Daniele (Robert) Meeker, Katie Coster; great-grandchildren, Charlotte Wanona Hathcox and Thunder Coster. She also had extended family of Leann, of whom she thought so much; Justin (Bonnie) Meier, boys Seth, Tanner, Ripplinger, daughter Jessica (Adam) and children, Jackson, Wesley, Elise and Stuart.
A funeral was held at the Chapel of the Chimes in Glendale, Arizona. Graveside service was held at the National Cemetery in Glendale where she was laid to rest with her husband, William.

Robin A. Stair

Robin A. (Cooper) Stair, 62 of Charlotte passed away unexpectedly in her sleep on March 20, 2023. This beautiful, crazy Robin was born in Charlotte on October 6, 1960, to Robert and Beverly Cooper. She was an accomplished oboe player in the high school band and graduated from Charlotte High School with the class of 1978. On November 24, 1984, Robin married Scott Stair and together they raised five children. Robin would travel from her home in Williamsburg to Charlotte to plan and raise funds for her Relay For Life team. She was very organized and loved making cross stitched quilts for new babies. Employed in a diverse number of jobs over the years Robin currently worked in the Eaton County Civil Division. She held multiple jobs but none as special as mom. Having five children, there was always a houseful of so many of the Stair children’s friends who also called her Momma Robin. She endured a lot of loss and adversity throughout the years, but Robin championed life with a beautiful smile, fun, love and laughter.
She is leaving to grieve, daughter, Jacque (Ian) van der Linde of Hertford, England; sons, Jason, Jeremy, Justin (Jamie), and Jacob (Katie) Stair of Charlotte. This Gigi will be sorely missed by her grandchildren, Bram, Phin, Emma, Owen, Ryleigh and Gaige; her sister, Laura Cooper; in-laws, Clarence and Connie Battice; life-long friends, Liz Riebow (Mike Schaefer) of Traverse City and Iva (Mitch) Hopkins of Nashville; several nieces and nephews; and a host of special friends. Robin was preceded in death by her husband, Scott; her parents; and brother, Tim Cooper.

Kelly Noreen Garivay

Kelly Noreen Garivay passed away due to cancer on March 15, 2023, in Lansing, Michigan. Born May 3, 1983, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to William Roy Draper and Donna Rae Draper.
Kelly played hockey from the time she was able to walk and was awarded MVP in her Junior A Girls Canadian Hockey Team. She would also play on several “boys only” teams. There were several times she was put in the penalty box for being too aggressive against the male players. She graduated High School from Calgary, Alberta. Kelly lived in London, Ontario for several years with her father and worked for his flooring company, “King of Floors.” She later moved to Lansing, Michigan where she attended Lansing Community College, receiving an associate degree in Emergency Medical Services and a Certified Nursing Assistant.
Kelly married Rogelio Garivay in San Antonio on April 9, 2010, and they had one son, Rogelio Garivay Jr., born on her birthday, May 3, 2012. Kelly returned to Lansing, Michigan in 2018 where she worked for her family’s flooring business, Floressence Surfaces Flooring Outlet. She also opened “Blazin’ Honey Queen” in Charlotte, Mich., which was an artisanal business specializing in CBD candles and honey.
Kelly is survived by her former husband, Rogelio Garivay; son, Rogelio Garivay Jr.; father, William Draper; mother, Donna Draper; stepmother, Tamara Shriner; brothers, Robert Draper and Neil Draper; step-sister, Nicole Shriner; and step-grandfather, Stanley Wenck.
Kelly will be remembered for her passion and creativity. She was a nurturing and protective mother, holding an immeasurable bond with her son, Rogelio. Kelly was very compassionate and cared about the people in her community, hosting several fundraisers for local children’s charities. Her strength and fighting spirit were an inspiration to her friends and family.
Kelly’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff at McLaren Hospital that supported them during the past two years.
A celebration of life will be held for Kelly in the Summer of 2023. The time and place will be determined at a later date.

Patricia Langmaack, a selfless person, always full of love, died peacefully at the age of 88. Pat was born on Independence Day, July 4, 1934, in Charlotte to Leonard and Isabelle (LaBare) Johnson, and passed on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2023. After graduating from Olivet High school in 1952, Pat worked for Drs. Chapman and Britton in their Optometry office and then at Quentin Bosworth’s Veterinary practice for many years. Her love of agriculture led her to employment at the Michigan Livestock Exchange in Battle Creek, Michigan, from where she eventually retired. A 4-H volunteer for many years, Pat taught countless young people the skills of sewing and cooking, many of whom became “adopted” grandchildren.
Pat married Hans Langmaack in 1953 and the couple purchased their farm just three years later where they went on to raise their family and make countless memories. Ever devoted to her family, Pat was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who was often found caring for grandchildren and baking treats for all who visited. Hans and Pat enjoyed time with friends and family and spent many fun evenings visiting with friends at Thursday night “farmer’s suppers.”
Patricia is survived by her children, Peggy (Michael) Papoi, Robert (Debbie) Langmaack, Karl (Kendra) Langmaack and Chris (Kristina) Langmaack; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Hans in 2020; daughter, Amy Hettinger; her siblings, Peggy (Caroll) Moon, Richard (Marilyn) Johnson, Casey (Billie) Johnson, Leonard Johnson Jr.; and special friend, Micki Fay.

Matthew David O’Daniel, our beloved son, brother, and friend, age 21, of Eaton Rapids, passed away as a result of a car accident on March 15, 2023. Matthew was born in Lansing on July 24, 2001, the son of David and Ann O’Daniel. He graduated with honors from Eaton Rapids High School in 2019, where he participated in cross country, swimming, track, and marching/concert bands. He was attending Michigan State University studying International Relations in the James Madison College. Matthew also was a rifleman with the 1st Battalion, 24th Marines, Charlie Company 3rd Platoon, Marine Forces Reserve, with the rank of Lance Corporal. In boot camp, he earned the honor of expert marksman. His plans were to complete his degree at MSU, continue his career with the U.S. Marines, and serve his country. He was an active member of St. Peter Catholic Church and had been a fifteen-year member of the 4-H program, where he participated in shooting sports, poultry, and numerous other activities with his clubs. As per his final wishes, he was an organ donor through the Gift of Life program. Matthew unfailingly brightened the lives of all he met, put the needs of others before his own, and was always willing to help.
Matthew loved the outdoors, especially family vacations spent swimming, hiking, and camping. He made a habit of coming home on Sundays to go to Mass with his mom and dad. This also gave him time to spend with the family pets, which he adored. He will be missed dearly, especially by his family, Marine brothers, and roommates: Patrick and Tim O’Daniel (cousins), and best friend Jordan Hawkins.
Matthew is survived by his parents; sister, Sarah (Kevin) O’Daniel-Heichlinger of Frederick, MD; grandmothers, Kay O’Daniel of East Leroy, MI and Joann Poirier of Standish, MI; and multiple aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Louis O’Daniel and Richard Poirier.
A Funeral Mass with Military Honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at St. Peter Catholic Church, Eaton Rapids, MI. Visitation was Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mills Funeral Home, Shelly-Odell Chapel, with a Rosary prayed at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday. Judith “Judy” Kay Tink of St. Johns, formerly of Eaton Rapids, passed away surrounded by her family, March 19, 2023, at the age of 80. Judy was born in Kalamazoo, MI, January 30, 1943, the daughter of Harland and Barbara (Weber) Kelley. She retired from the Michigan Health and Hospital Association in 2008 with 25 years of service. Judy enjoyed crocheting, knitting, playing bingo, gardening, canning, and working on puzzles. She volunteered at Heart and Hands, was a member of the First United Methodist Church and involved with the Stephen’s Ministries.
Judy is survived by her children, Lisa Ulman, Steve (Sue) Tink, Laura (Ross) Phillips, Scott (Julie) Tink; 10 Grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; sister, Merry Lou Scalzo. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Daniel Tink; son, Samuel Tink; sisters, Dixie Drewett, Beverly Coulon.

Martin Arthur Husby of Potterville, passed away March 17, 2023, at the age of 66. Marty was born in Lansing, September 15, 1956, the son of Charles and Helen (Hawley) Husby. He was a 1974 graduate of Eaton Rapids High School. Marty worked for Hal Clark Tailors in Lansing and was “Mr. Marty” the water safety instructor for Eaton Rapids, Charlotte and Holt Schools, proudly instructing thousands of his little fishies. He enjoyed watching and learning things from the Discovery Channel, bird watching, and gardening. Marty was most of all a family man that shared his laughs, hugs, tears and love with his large family. He will be greatly missed by all of them along with his pets and friends.
Marty is survived by his wife, Nila Husby; children, Heidi (Matt) Kirchen of Charlotte, Laurah (Kate and Chris) Calligan of Warren, Charles Husby of Lansing, Trisha (R. Adam) Lentz of Potterville, Jessica (Tim) David of Bath, Adam (Hannah) Husby of Grand Rapids; grandchildren, Courtney, Tanner, Montgomery, Zander, Dylan, Camdyn, Arthur, Christopher, Daniel, Isaac, Wyatt, Ella and Sawyer; sisters, Christine Hays, Amy Richter; brother, Thomas (Patricia) Husby; numerous nieces and nephews; his dogs, Little Girl Sprout, Ruby “Ru”; his cats, Vallie, Oscar and Chuckie. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Gordon Hays.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 28, 2023, at the Mills Funeral Home, Shelly-Odell Chapel with visitation one hour prior to the service.
